Eindhoven Metal Meeting 2024 forced to cancel IMPALED NAZARENE

05-12-2024

With EINDHOVEN METAL MEETING, set to take place at the Effenaar, Eindhoven, on December 13 and 14, only just over a week ahead of us, the anual 2 day metal festival announces that they were forced to cancel the band IMPALED NAZARENE, from Finland. The reason for the cancellation is that the band is not welcome to perform at the venue.

Says Eindhoven Metal Meeting:

Today, we were informed by Effenaar that, due to social and political pressure, the band Impaled Nazarene is no longer welcome to perform at their venue.

While we must accept this decision, we respectfully disagree with it.
Impaled Nazarene was booked and announced almost a year ago and has previously performed at Effenaar multiple times without any complaints. We firmly believe in the principles of freedom of speech and music as a legitimate form of artistic expression.
Black Metal, by its very nature, embodies rebellion, nihilism, and provocation. The band’s “Zero Tolerance” lyrics, written over 25 years ago, may indeed provoke controversy, but they reflect an artistic ethos rather than a real societal threat. Over their career, the band has made a point of challenging and offending basically everyone.
Recently, accusations have surfaced suggesting the band poses a threat to society and minorities, and claims have been made that people no longer feel safe attending the venue. Unfortunately, these allegations are rooted in manipulated narratives and misinformation.
It’s disheartening to see how misinformation and external pressures have led to this cancellation. While genuine societal issues exist outside the walls of the venue, the Metal community has long been a space of inclusivity and mutual respect.
Art, especially music, must retain the freedom to challenge, provoke, and even be uncomfortable. It is a true shame that these principles have been overshadowed in this instance.”

Effenaar states:

“Over the past few weeks, pop venue Effenaar has been at the centre of an intense and polarising debate regarding the upcoming performance by the band Impaled Nazarene on Saturday, December 14, during Eindhoven Metal Meeting (EMM). This discussion has stirred strong emotions and placed both our venue and the festival in a context that does not align with who we are or what we stand for.

Effenaar: Over 50 Years of Culture, Freedom, and Dialogue

For over 50 years, Effenaar has been a broadly oriented platform for art, music, and culture that confronts, challenges, and connects. What began as a breeding ground for alternative thinkers and a home base for the punk scene has evolved into a space where artists dare to question the status quo and push the boundaries of art and artistry. This history forms the core of our identity and inspires us to uphold our values, even in times of controversy.

The Context of Eindhoven Metal Meeting

For 16 years, Eindhoven Metal Meeting has been an internationally renowned festival in the extreme metal scene. The festival provides a platform for bands that push artistic boundaries and challenge audiences. Within this tradition, Impaled Nazarene was programmed—a band known for their nihilistic, provocative, and absurdist lyrics. While this genre often shocks and confronts, it is important to recognise its artistic intent: a means to shock and provoke reflection. We acknowledge that their song Zero Tolerance has evoked strong emotions. The song also evokes feelings of disgust and indignation in the team of Effenaar and Eindhoen Metal Meeting. The band, however, defies all conceivable conventions and themes. They aim to antagonize people with absurdist lyrics. With songs about steel vaginas, motor penises, and goat sodomy, they place themselves in a tradition of nihilistic provocation. Their work must be viewed in this context.

Media Framing

We are both surprised and disappointed that some (local) media outlets have uncritically adopted and disseminated reports on this situation without seeking context from Effenaar, Eindhoven Metal Meeting, or the band itself. No thorough investigation was conducted into the band, their work, or the festival. This has resulted in a one-sided, incomplete narrative that fosters polarisation. This framing not only misrepresents our venue but also disrespects the Eindhoven Metal Meeting audience and artists. The situation has been further exacerbated by the destructive dynamics of social media. Fragments of a complex story were taken out of context and spread widely, leading to a storm of opinions from individuals often unfamiliar with the context. This has clouded the discussion and contributed to a polarised climate devoid of nuance.

The Decision to Cancel

The decision to cancel Impaled Nazarene’s performance was not made impulsively but resulted from a lengthy process of deliberation and reflection. Following careful deliberation and discussions with representatives of the LGBTQ+ community, Eindhoven Metal Meeting’s partners, the band’s representative, our Supervisory Board, staff, Effenaar visitors, and other stakeholders, we have decided to cancel Impaled Nazarene’s performance. This decision was not taken lightly. It reflects our responsibility to maintain a safe and inclusive space while staying true to our core values of artistic freedom and providing a platform for alternative voices. Although we do not necessarily endorse every expression on our stage, we remain committed to our mission of providing a platform for art and culture that fosters dialogue and reflection. However, the debate surrounding this performance has spiralled out of control, fuelling further polarisation. The responses we have received, both personally and on social media, have at times been deeply troubling. The focus has shifted away from meaningful dialogue about the role of music in society to judgment and condemnation—a process we will not support. We strongly distance ourselves from homophobia and other forms of discrimination that have surfaced in this discussion. These have no place in our values, and we refuse to give them a platform. Our role is to connect, not to divide, and this remains the essence of our mission.

Artistic freedom vs. Safe Spaces

Effenaar remains a venue where artistic freedom can flourish. Art and culture are essential pillars of a reflective society. We also take pride in our strong collaboration with the LGBTQ+ community, our role as an ally in providing a safe haven, and our long-standing partnership with Eindhoven Metal Meeting. We reject hate and intolerance in any form and continue to stand for an inclusive and respectful environment.

An Invitation to Dialogue

This situation underscores the need for a broader conversation about the role of art and culture in society. – How can the cultural sector continue to connect in a time of increasing polarisation?
– How can art retain its space to confront, and even shock, without succumbing to division? Effenaar invites politicians, the cultural sector, artists, and our communities to join us for a debate early next year at Effenaar. Together, we aim to explore how art can continue to challenge, connect, and remain meaningful in our current society.

Conclusion

With this decision, we reaffirm our commitment to inclusivity and respect while continuing to advocate for freedom of art and culture. Effenaar remains a place where music and culture have the power to inspire and connect. We strive for a society where there is room for dialogue and understanding: staying true to the values that have defined us for over 50 years.”
