DEATH DEALER share an official statement regarding Ross “The Boss” Friedman

18-02-2026

All-star heavy metal band DEATH DEALER and Massacre Records are deeply saddened to share difficult news concerning guitarist and founding member Ross “The Boss” Friedman.

The band has issued the following official statement:

We are devastated by the news that our brother, Ross the Boss, has been diagnosed with ALS.

From the very first day this band came together, we have operated as more than musicians, we are a brotherhood. That bond, that loyalty, and that respect for one another will never change.

This diagnosis, however, inevitably changes the road ahead for Death Dealer in terms of new music and live performances. Ross is not someone who can be replaced, nor would we ever try.

His contribution to heavy metal is monumental, timeless, and deeply woven into the fabric of this genre. His legacy stands on its own and will continue to inspire generations.

Right now, our focus is not on stages or studios, but on standing beside our brother as he faces this battle with the strength and courage that has always defined him.

We ask the metal community to keep Ross in your thoughts and to honour him the way he has always honoured the music, with passion, loyalty, and heart.

We stand with Ross. Always.

Massacre Records stands fully united with DEATH DEALER during this time. Ross “The Boss” Friedman is not only a legendary guitarist whose influence has shaped generations of heavy metal musicians worldwide, but also a respected artist whose dedication, integrity and passion embody the very spirit of the genre.

Ross “The Boss” Friedman, a founding member of both MANOWAR and THE DICTATORS, whose influence in heavy metal and punk is noticeable to this day, has been diagnosed with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), also known as known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

statement from Ross‘s publicist reads as follows: “Ross ‘The Boss’ Friedman, founding member of punk rock legends THE DICTATORS and heavy metal stalwarts MANOWAR, has been diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS),commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. The diagnosis followed several months of seemingly unrelated symptoms that included weakness in his hands and legs. A series of very minor strokes was initially thought to have been the cause, but changes in diet, exercise and added physical therapy did nothing to slow the progression or increase his strength.”

The 72-year-old Friedman added in his own statement: “It’s difficult to know what lies ahead, and it crushes me not to be able to play guitar, but the outpouring of love has been so, so strong. I’m absolutely blown away by the love and support from family, friends and fans. I love you all.”

According to an accompanying statement, Friedman was diagnosed after several months of “seemingly unrelated symptoms,” such as weakness in his hands and legs. Originally, Friedman thought these had been caused by a “series of very minor strokes,” but “changes in diet, exercise and added physical therapy did nothing to slow the progression or increase his strength.”

Friedman, born in the Bronx, cut his teeth in the very early days of New York’s punk scene, co-founding the Dictators in 1973 with his friends Andy Shernoff and Scott Kempner. During their original run, the group released a trio of albums, most notably 1977’s Manifest Destiny, which managed to crack the Billboard 200 Albums chart.

ALS is a progressive, fatal neurodegenerative disease that destroys motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord, causing muscle weakness, paralysis, and loss of voluntary muscle control.

Ross recorded six albums with MANOWAR before leaving after 1988’s “Kings Of Metal”. His work with MANOWAR included such classic LPs as 1982’s “Battle Hymns”, 1983’s “Into Glory Ride” and 1984’s “Hail To England”.
