VOLBEAT/ASINHELL's MICHAEL POULSEN: 'I'm a big nerd and I'm proud of it'

01-07-2024

In a new interview with Germany’s Moshpit PassionVOLBEAT frontman Michael Poulsen spoke about his new death metal band ASINHELL, which released its debut album, “Impii Hora” (Latin for “Ungodly Hour”), last September via Metal Blade. Regarding how the idea for ASINHELL came about, Michael said: “Well, the thing is when I formed VOLBEAT, that was the idea to mix a lot of different styles that I couldn’t mix in death metal when I had my first death metal band back in the days, DOMINUS. So, that was kind of a break, and that was just on pause doing death metal. So I grew up with all these ’50s melodic tunes and was listening to a lot of different styles of music, and I wanted to combine that in one band and that became VOLBEAT. And VOLBEAT became extremely busy on the road and in studios and there was no time for a second band. So, I guess, like so many other people, they had the time to reflect on a lot of stuff during the pandemic, and I had the time to sit down and actually open up for the dark coffin of death metal riffs again. So that’s what I did. And my good friend L.G. (Petrov) from ENTOMBED sadly passed away. And he kind of gave me a push at the very end to start this project. I’m already sure that people already know the story, or else Google it because I’ve been talking a lot about it. But he kind of gave me the push to get started. And here we are.”

Asked if it was hard to convince his business team that it was a good idea for him to make an album that is not as “commercial” as VOLBEATMichael said: “Everything I do is with passion and for the love of what I’m doing. I had no idea that VOLBEAT one day would become such a big band and a good business. We’ve been constantly touring and we’re constantly working very, very hard and dedicated. We could easily retire, but why should we do that? We still love what we’re doing, and I’m doing this death metal thing for the same reason — for the passion, for the love of old-school death metal. I’m a big nerd and I’m proud of it. So, it’s not a secret that I’ve been missing going out and playing death metal again, but I just never really had the time for doing it. So, everybody knows that the only business there is in death metal is hangovers. (Laughs) I’m just having a really good time doing this. So, no matter what I do in life, it’s done with passion. And I have absolutely no intention of creating something that could lead to a good business, because I’ll leave that up to other people. It just came to be that VOLBEAT became that big.”

ASINHELL made its live debut on May 30 at Pumphuset in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Pumphuset was the first show of ASINHELL‘s European tour in support of “Impii Hora”. The trek includes festivals as well as intimate club shows. ENDSEEKER is support on all headline shows except for Zurich, where the band was supported by New Zealand powerhouse ALIEN WEAPONRY and Copenhagen, where SICKOMANIA (featuring Jesper K OlsenMichael‘s former bandmate in DOMINUS) opened the show.

Joining ASINHELL on the road are legendary Danish producer Jacob Hansen (ex-INVOCATOR) on bass as well as Flemming C. Lund of THE ARCANE ORDER on lead guitar, making the band’s first live incarnation the same lineup that performed on “Impii Hora”.

ASINHELL has previously released the official music video for the song “Pyromantic Scryer”. The track is taken from ASINHELL‘s debut album, “Impii Hora”, which arrived last September via Metal Blade.

‘Pyromantic Scryer’ was the first song I wrote for the album and it surely has an ENTOMBED vibe, and as I’ve said before, it was [late ENTOMBED singer] L.G. Petrov who kicked started the birth of ASINHELL,” says Poulsen.

“Pyromancy is the ‘art’ of prophecy/augury by any means of fire,” says Grewe. “The song is about a mad man who thinks he can predict the future from fires. Fires he sets himself. In his delusion, he thinks he is a misunderstood messiah. The song can also been seen metaphorical on some things that are going on (and wrong) in the world of today… a small spark of a mad man (or group/cult) can set the world on fire. I think the video created by Shan Dan shows this dangerous behavior in a quite drastic way!”

For more than 20 years, vocalist/guitarist Michael Poulsen has been spearheading Danish rock and roll machine VOLBEAT, releasing eight full-lengths, selling millions of albums, and filling stadiums worldwide. Before fronting VOLBEAT, however, Poulsen formed death metal band DOMINUS, which recorded four fast, brutal albums in the mid-’90s.

When Poulsen was putting together songs for VOLBEAT‘s 2021 album “Servant Of The Mind”, he wrote a bunch of death metal riffs and saved them on his phone. Then, when he was done with the VOLBEAT record, he reopened the rusty gates to Armageddon and started putting together songs for his new death metal band ASINHELL, whose debut album “Impii Hora” (Latin for “Ungodly Hour”), is a tribute to Poulsen‘s favorite old-school groups. The songs are rooted in crushing riffs yet injected with strong guitar hooks and shout-along refrains.

While Poulsen sings in VOLBEAT and sang for DOMINUS, he didn’t want to front ASINHELL. So, in March 2022, he called his old friend, ex-MORGOTH singer Marc Grewe (also of INSIDIOUS DISEASE) and invited him to join the party.

“I had known Michael quite a long time and he always mentioned that we should do a death metal project one day, but I never took him too seriously because he was so busy with VOLBEAT,” Grewe says. “Then he called for real and said, ‘Yeah, I want to do it now. Are you up for it?’ Immediately, I was ‘Yes, of course!'”

After considering drummer friends from established bands, Poulsen asked Morten Toft Hansen from Danish group RAUNCHY to join. Not only does Morten play like a fiend possessed, his and Poulsen‘s six-year-old daughters are good friends… and, it takes just 10 minutes to drive to Morten‘s place.

The two veteran musicians started practicing and completed a full song almost every time they got together. Grewe was tied up at home in Germany when it came time to write the vocals, so Poulsen sent the singer phone recordings from rehearsals to start the process. Through Poulsen and Toft Hansen‘s years of experience and renewed hunger to destroy, they captured a firestorm in a bottle.
