EXODUS's GARY HOLT on split with Steve 'Zetro' Souza: 'The five of us need to be on the same page. And now we are.'

During an appearance on the latest episode of the “Rock And Roll Geek Show” podcast, which is hosted by former EXODUS bassist Michael Butler, EXODUS guitarist Gary Holt opened up about the recent departure of singer Steve “Zetro” Souza. He said: “ People ask why we fired Zetro — everybody wants to know because we’ve chosen not to tell anybody. All I ever tell people is, marriages don’t often work. And just ’cause you saw a married couple out in public that seemed happy, you don’t know what’s going on at home. I don’t know if the wife’s throwing frying pans at his head or he’s fucking drunk out of his ass, fucking screaming at him and slapping the kids. You don’t know. Just ’cause they go out in public and they put on a happy face.
“We’ve got nothing but respect for Zetro, and we’ve got love for him and I’m honored to have made some great music with him. But I’m also 60 years old, and the five of us need to be on the same page. And now we are.”
After Butler suggested that musicians sometimes have different personalities and “people can get on your nerves sometimes”, Holt clarified: “It’s not even a matter of anything like that because we all get on each other’s nerves. It’s just as you get older, this job, either you still love it or it becomes incredibly difficult… For me, it’s fucking not difficult at all. And so, for whatever our reasons, four guys had a reason to do what we did.”
Asked if he personally called Zetro to tell the singer he was fired, Gary responded: “I don’t really wanna go into all that. (Laughs) There’s no hate involved. It’s just the fucking marriage didn’t work. Sometimes you get along with your ex. Sometimes you don’t hate your ex; you just can’t be married to them anymore… Sometimes the wife still likes him and he’s a good father, but God, what a fucking crappy husband. Or what a bad life. But she was good with the kids and she’s a member of the PTA. Who fucking knows?
“What’s funny is online people are coming up with their conspiracy theories (about why Zetro was fired),” he continued. “It’s like Pizzagate. It’s fucking crazy. Like that it had something to do with that he just got married. Like, ‘Rob Dukes got married right when he got fired, and Zetro got married before he got fired. Hmm. Pattern?’ Dude, I’ve got grandkids. Like I fucking have a problem with my singer being married. Fucking stupid. I had one guy, when it happened, he got on my Instagram and he broke down his timeline of how we treat singers. Well, the first thing he said was, ‘Gary Holt‘s just all about the money.’ And if you fucking think parting ways with your singer is a fucking path to financial security, you’re fucking high. What the fuck’s wrong with you? And then he broke down his whole timeline. And I politely corrected his timeline for him. I don’t respond to fucking people — I ain’t got time for — but the guy goes, ‘Band hires Paul (Baloff). Fires Paul.’ True. Paul was fired. Paul‘s life was a mess. In hindsight, we later became just as big a mess as he ever was. And then he said, ‘Band hires singer, Steve Souza.’ And he goes, ‘Band fires Steve Souza.’ No, we broke up after ‘Force Of Habit’. He goes, ‘Band rehires Paul Baloff. Band fires Paul Baloff.’ I’m, like, ‘He fucking died. We didn’t fire him. He died.’ And then he said, ‘Band hires Steve Souza. Band fires Steve Souza.’ No, he quit… In his eyes, we fired the dead guy. And I was, like, ‘Just fuck off,’ you know?, I politely said, ‘Hey, buddy, let me correct your timeline for you.’ I didn’t go, ‘Fuck you, dude.’ I just said, ‘Let me fix your timeline.’
“People are dumb,” Holt added. “And I don’t like to be mean to people. I’ve done stupid shit myself. But people fucking create whatever theories they can come up with in their little brains.”
Regarding why he and his EXODUS bandmates decided to bring singer Rob Dukes back to the group, Gary said: “I’m 60 years old. The idea of getting an unfamiliar person in the band would not be an option… I think we all reached out when we became apparent. And sure, I could have found some 30-year-old dude who could still jump off a drum riser and has washboard abs and is not all fat like the rest of us. But I need someone who’s close to my own age. I’m too old to have to like fucking educate some young kid on music that I like.”
Holt also talked about the progress of the recording sessions for EXODUS‘s follow-up to 2021’s “Persona Non Grata” album. He said: “Personally, I have two more songs of rhythm guitars to do. Lee (Altus, EXODUS guitarist) still has some. We’re literally racing, trying to record two albums at once. Even if we don’t finish it, we’ll have the second album close to ready. Maybe we’ll have to do some solos or vocals later, but we won’t have to do this whole process again. Now I’m thinking, like, all right, we’re gonna finish the album, get the guitars and drums done for album two. And then when it’s time to think about releasing the album, we don’t have to do this whole process again. Even before then, when we have a break, we can go and finish this stuff so that when we normally would start recording an album, maybe I can finally go on a vacation. I never had one.”
When asked if all the songs are written for both albums, Holt said: “Yeah. Yeah. We’ve got a couple more to finish, but we write and record through the whole process. We don’t stop. Drummer Tom Hunting and I are writing it, along with Lee. Lee‘s writing a whole lot of stuff for this record.
“A lot of bands, they go in, the record’s done, they do the drums, and the drums go away. And now we’re on the guitar stuff. But we don’t do that anymore,” Gary explained. “We leave the drums up the whole time so we could write the whole time. Because sometimes our best stuff happens at the end. I just finished a new song yesterday. It’s just the most furious thing in the world. It’s fucking insane. This shit is fucking heavy. The one I wrote yesterday, Lee heard my little demo and he asked if I started icing my wrist down yet. It’s fucking heavy. But there’s some really great songs on it. It’s not just heavy. Right now I think we’re at 18 songs, with two more to finish. That’s two albums.
“I look at it like this: I’m getting older,” Holt added. “And you start worrying about shit like mortality and if I fucking died. Between this album and the next one, there’s Gary Holt‘s final fucking release and put some money and earn some royalties for my grandkids and my kids and my wife, because, of course, your albums sell better when you’re dead.”
In a recent interview with The Chuck Shute Podcast, EXODUS guitarist and main songwriter Gary Holt spoke about the progress of the recording sessions for the band’s follow-up to 2021’s “Persona Non Grata” album. He said: “We’ve been in the studio for two weeks now. Tom‘s (Hunting, EXODUS drummer) wrapping up drums.
“We’ve set ourselves an ambitious goal on this record,” he continued. “We’re recording two albums right now. We are a couple of songs shy from hitting our total goal of having two albums of crushing material. No filler. We figured if we have the songs, let’s record ’em. And when it’s time to release the follow-up, it’s done, it’s in the can. The chances are by the time we get to that point, I’ll have new stuff that has to be included: ‘Oh, this is so good.’ But then we go into the studio for two weeks, not two months.”
Asked by host Chuck Shute if that means EXODUS will release the first new album when it’s ready and wait a while before putting out the second one, Holt said: “Yeah, we’ll keep (the second new album) in the can, ready to go, and won’t have any downtime. We’re not getting any younger. We might as well work a little extra hard now while we can.”
As for when the first new EXODUS LP might see the light of day, Gary said: “We’re shooting for a spring release of next year — like late winter, spring. We were hoping to get it done this year, get it out this year, but we would have had to rush it. And since we’re trying to record 20 to 22 songs and we needed the time, it’s gonna be worth it in the end. And the shit is fucking phenomenal.”
Holt added: “We’re definitely a hard-working bunch. We’re not afraid to bust our ass. And it’ll save us some work down the road. In between that little break between albums, we’ll be able to relax a little. Maybe I can finally go on a vacation. I’ve never had one.”
This past January, it was announced that EXODUS had parted ways with longtime singer Steve “Zetro” Souza and was being rejoined by Rob Dukes.
Gary Holt has confirmed that Steve “Zetro” Souza was fired from EXODUS, explaining that the “marriage” between the singer and the rest of the band was “done and over”.
Last month it was announced that EXODUS had parted ways with Zetro and had been rejoined by Rob Dukes.
Souza joined EXODUS in 1986 after previously fronting the band LEGACY (which later became TESTAMENT). He remained in the band until their hiatus in 1993, but rejoined them for two years from 2002 to 2004. Dukes had joined EXODUS in 2005 (following Souza‘s departure) and remained until 2014, when Souza rejoined.
Asked by fan on Instagram why Zetro was “let go” this time around, Gary replied: “If I told you you’d understand. I’ve no desire to talk badly about him. It’s a marriage, being in a band. Behind closed doors, the marriage was done and over”.

When one of Zetro‘s followers wrote, “We need a statement why you left EXODUS again”, the singer replied: “Really no statement, I was let go , if you read the [band’s official] statement it says EXODUS has parted ways , not Zetro has parted ways !”

After another one of his followers asked, “Why did you leave EXODUS?”, Zetro replied: “I did not leave , I was let go !! EXODUS parted ways with Zetro“.

When EXODUS announced Souza‘s latest departure on January 15, the band wrote in a statement: “We thank Steve for his years fronting the band and all the killer music we made during that time. We wish him only the best in the future and much success with anything he does.
Dukes joined EXODUS in January 2005 and appeared on four of the band’s studio albums — “Shovel Headed Kill Machine” (2005), “The Atrocity Exhibition… Exhibit A” (2007), “Let There Be Blood” (2008, a re-recording of EXODUS‘s classic 1985 LP, “Bonded By Blood”) and “Exhibit B: The Human Condition” (2010).
The thrash metal legends in June 2014 announced the departure of Dukes and the return of his predecessor, Souza, who previously fronted EXODUS from 1986 to 1993 and from 2002 to 2004.
Dukes addressed his then-relationship with EXODUS in a June 2022 interview with Scott Penfold of the “Loaded Radio” podcast. He said: “When EXODUS fired me, it took me about a year to not be angry about it. It was unexpected — I didn’t see it coming — and it was a hard time in life. I’d just moved; I’d just gotten married. It was a heavy burden. And it took me a while. And about a year later, after Gary (Holt, EXODUS guitarist) called me and we spoke, they flew me up to San Francisco and I sat down with them. And we laid it out on the table. And it made it better — just to clear the wreckage of that. And I moved on with my life, and they moved on with their life. I did one show with them — I did a few songs up in San Francisco — and then I just started living my life.”
Dukes went on to say that he no longer dwells on the negative circumstances surrounding his departure from EXODUS.
“(EXODUS) was definitely a part of my life, but I don’t rely on it,” he said. “So I just move forward. But our friendship is good, man. I went up there to see… After Tom (Hunting, EXODUS drummer) got sick (with cancer in early 2021), we were talking the entire time and I was aware of his situation. And then when the time was right, after he had done some chemo sessions and was feeling a little better, I flew up and spent a couple of days with Tom. And I saw Gary, and I went and had lunch with Lee (Altus, EXODUS guitarist).
“Look, man, we lived together for 10 years. That bond is very difficult to break,” Rob explained. “Especially when the reason I got fired, it wasn’t personal; it was business. I took it personally in the beginning. But this is a harsh business, man, and there’s a lot of fucking snakes out there and there’s a lot of weird people who want their little piece. And it’s kind of what happened. It was just business. Looking back on it, it was all for the best.”
Three years after he was fired from EXODUS, Dukes performed with the band during a July 2017 concert in San Francisco, California. He sang several songs with the group on the second of EXODUS‘s two-night stint at The Chapel in what marked the band’s first headlining Bay Area club shows since late 2013.
Rob previously discussed his split with EXODUS during a December 2020 pay-per-view video conversation with Souza, recorded earlier that month at Zetro‘s studio in the San Francisco Bay Area as part of Souza‘s “Zetro’s Toxic Vault” YouTube interview series. At the time, Dukes said that the seed for his exit from EXODUS was planted during the songwriting and pre-production sessions for the band’s 2014 album “Blood In Blood Out”. “One night, before a show, me, Lee, Tom and Jack (Gibson, drums) were sitting, and we said, ‘You know, we should do this album different. We should do this one where we actually rehearse together and we go through the songs like a band would do ’em in the old days’ — go through ’em and maybe pick apart parts, maybe make ’em better, do it that way,” he said. “I thought it was a great plan; I agreed. I come home, fly back out a couple of weeks later and everything is done. They’re doing the drums, but Jack is doing the engineering, and (longtime British producer) Andy (Sneap) is not doing the vocals. And at that time, nothing against Jack — I love Jack — but the difference was, working with Andy, I didn’t have to sing the whole line all the way through over and over again. Jack wasn’t able to, at this time, edit in a word if I fucked up; I had to start all over. And the dissent had started with me. I felt a lot of the songs were very repetitious.
“Now, I could have just kept my mouth shut and just went along with it if I wanted to keep my job, even though it wouldn’t have mattered, because the business decisions, I think, were being made behind the scenes with Metal Maria and Chuck (Billy, TESTAMENT singer). I, actually, in front of everyone, challenged Chuck. ‘Cause Chuck was now managing the band. We’re halfway through the record, and they said, ‘Well, Chuck‘s gonna manage the band.’ I go, ‘You don’t see that as a conflict of interest — a little bit?’ And I said this to Chuck, to his face. I said, ‘You’re telling me, if you get an opportunity, you’re not gonna have TESTAMENT take the gig; you’re gonna give EXODUS the gig? Get the fuck outta here, dude! I wouldn’t do that, so I know you’re not gonna do that.’ He’s, like, ‘I wouldn’t do that.’ I go, ‘You’re not being honest with me. You’re not being honest with yourself.’ And it caused, like, a thing. And everyone was mad at me, ’cause the boys don’t like confrontation. And it wasn’t the songs. The songs were the songs. I thought ‘BTK’ was killer. Dude, you did ‘BTK’ awesome,” he said, complimenting Zetro. “There were certain things about it. I don’t wanna shit on it, but some of it just seemed regurgitated. I was, like, ‘This song sounds like that song,’ and, ‘This song sounds like this song,’ and it started to weigh on me. Like I said, I could have just kept my mouth shut and just played the game and not rocked the boat, but it wasn’t my nature. My nature was, ‘No, man. We’re better than this. We need to top ourselves over the last thing we did,’ and I didn’t feel like it was doing that — I felt like it was actually declining a little bit, in my eyes, from my position. But it didn’t mean that I didn’t give everything I had — I gave everything I had on vocals — but Jack was beating me up, because I was constantly not able to… Especially with some of the timing stuff — you’ve never done it before, and now you’re expected to do it forever. This is the CD, man — this is forever.”
Explaining why he was angry for such a long time about his dismissal from EXODUS, Dukes said: “Look, man, I was 47 years old at the time. I got married five days before. And you fucking fire me. If I was by myself, if I was just me, I would have been okay with it. I was responsible for another human being. I just moved my entire life from my comfortable New York upbringing to a place (in Arizona) where I know one person, and I don’t even know him that well; I know him from touring and watching him when I was a kid. I knew Roger Miret from AGNOSTIC FRONT; it’s the only guy I knew in Arizona.
“I remember telling my wife, ‘We’re gonna be okay. It’s fine. We’re fine. I’ll sell my car. And that’ll get us, like, a year rent, and we’ll be okay. I’ll figure it out. We’ll be okay.’ But in my head, I was fucking terrified,” he admitted. “And I felt like the EXODUS guys took something from me that I earned, that I deserved. But I was looking at it wrong. I didn’t deserve anything. I didn’t earn anything. I was grateful to be there. And I tried to do the right thing. I remember writing a statement and putting it out there. I was grateful — I was grateful for going to over a hundred countries in my lifetime, playing in front of the millions of people that I got to play over 10 years. I was grateful for every opportunity that was given to me; I was honestly grateful. But also, I was angry, and I had every right to be angry. But I wasn’t able to see it for what it was until a year later — it took me a year.”
Dukes said that he wishes he had been more vocal in the earlier stages of the making of “Blood In Blood Out”, particularly as it relates to EXODUS‘s choice of producer for the sessions.
“The truth was that my part in it, had I been honest from the beginning and I had said — ’cause there were times when I didn’t wanna rock the boat — ‘We are making fucking mistakes. And if you guys all wanna go to this next level that you all talk about, then let’s put our fucking money where our mouth is and change it the way we’re doing it,'” he said. “You’ve done it this way all this time and you’ve always gotten what you got. But if you change the game… Nothing against Andy, but if we bring in Colin Richardson, bring in fucking Zeuss (Chris Harris), bring in somebody from outside the game who had his own ideas of looking at things and maybe corral some of the chaotic stuff that was going on. And maybe go, ‘You know what? The song does sound like that song. Maybe we should fucking take this riff…’ Let producers do what they do… I thought it would have been awesome for somebody like Colin Richardson or Zeuss to come in and take Gary Holt (EXODUS guitarist and main songwriter) and sit him down and go, ‘This is awesome. But we can make this better. Let’s try this and try that.’ And that’s what the plan originally was.”
Looking back on how his split with EXODUS went down, Rob said during the “Zetro’s Toxic Vault” chat that he was “glad that everything worked out the way it did. And I was glad that Gary called me a year later and I spoke with him,” he said. “And he was legitimately sorry; I knew he was. And he said, ‘I want you to come to San Francisco.’ And then I was, like, ‘Well, how does Zet feel?’ And he goes, ‘It was Zet‘s idea.'”
Dukes also addressed the speculation that his substandard vocals on an early version of “Blood In Blood Out” were proof that he wasn’t sufficiently inspired to deliver the goods on the album. “That assumption has been said to me a bunch of times,” he said. “Even Lee has said, he goes, ‘Your heart wasn’t in it.’ And my ego, which I don’t have a big ego — it’s not like I’m an egotistical dick — but I can tell you that when I was on the microphone, I was giving my best, I was giving all I had. What I felt inside was that the songs weren’t as good. To me, they felt rushed. I felt some of the lyrics felt rushed.
“Me and Gary look at music very differently, and I think that’s why we kind of worked,” he continued. “Gary will write the lyrics before he writes the music, and he fits it in, where I write the music, write the melody and then fill in the words to the melody.
“It’s hard to say it without sounding like a dick, but it was very… I remember singing one song and going, ‘Dude, this is that other song.’ And then, hearing the lead, going, ‘That’s the lead from that other song.’ And I think that alone, trying to take my ego out of it, maybe my heart wasn’t it. I wish that it was.
“At the moment, I knew I was giving all I could, but the factors against me was I didn’t think the material was as strong as what we had already done,” Dukes added. “I wanted it to be better. It’s like setting bar for yourself and then not giving at least that measure. And then I thought that, as much as I love Jack, he wasn’t Andy Sneap. And working with Andy, there was something to working with Andy that pulls it out of me.
“I remember talking to (Rob) Halford about it, ’cause Andy recorded Halford with PRIEST. He made me do fucking 10 fucking takes of each line. When you do 10 takes of each line, and then he fucking pieces them together. And then you get back something and you’re, like, ‘Wow, that’s the way I sang that, huh? Cool.’ No, it wasn’t. It was the way Andy put it together. And then, all of a sudden, now you have a template. ‘Well, now I’m gonna do that live, ’cause that’s better.’ ‘Cause Andy knew what the fuck he was doing. But now you’re just leaving it to me raw. And I thought not having Andy there for the vocals made me mad — not mad; it just made me a little disheartened, I guess. Because working for two albums with Andy, I knew what to expect. No matter what template I was given, I knew that Andy was gonna make me do it the right way. And when we were doing it, it wasn’t that.”
Dukes still resides in Arizona, where he works as a mechanic specializing in car restoration.
In late 2024 EXODUS have released their cover of the AC/DC classic “Beating Around The Bush”. The track, which features a guest solo by former EXODUS guitarist Rick Hunolt, was originally recorded during the sessions for EXODUS‘s 2021 album “Persona Non Grata” but has not been released until now.

EXODUS singer Steve “Zetro” Souza is also the frontman of the long-running San Francisco Bay Area-based AC/DC tribute band AC/DZ, also featuring DEATH ANGEL drummer Will Carroll.
In an interview with Myglobalmind, Souza stated about AC/DC‘s singer change following the death of Scott: “You know, it took a while for everybody to get used to Brian Johnson after Bon. I was 16 when Bon Scott died, and I remember, I was, like, ‘Oh, my god, what are they going to do?! That voice is that music.’ He fitted that guitar, what they were doing; it was like a glove. How do you replace that? And then in time, Brian has become that, and out of everybody, I would have to say him and Bruce Dickinson (IRON MAIDEN) taking over from Paul Di’Anno did an amazing job in the transition.”
Back in 2015, Souza told Southeast Of Heaven that he preferred the Scott era of AC/DC over the Johnson era. “There’s no comparison,” he said. “That’s not to say that Brian‘s not any good. I respect Brian. Hell, he took over and if you think about it, he’s been in the band three times longer than Bon. Bon, the way that he sang. The way he wrote that tongue-in-cheek stuff. Like ‘Big Balls’. What’s that about? It’s about dance? It’s about his balls? (Laughs) The metaphors in that song were just clever as hell, and it’s hard to write clever.”
“Persona Non Grata” was recorded at a studio in Lake Almanor, California and was engineered by Steve Lagudi and EXODUS. It was produced by EXODUS and was mixed by Andy Sneap. For the third time in the band’s history, they returned to Swedish artist Pär Olofsson to create the album artwork.
“Persona Non Grata” is the follow-up to 2014’s “Blood In Blood Out”, which was the San Francisco Bay Area thrashers’ first release since the departure of the group’s lead singer of nine years, Rob Dukes, and the return of Souza, who previously fronted EXODUS from 1986 to 1993 and from 2002 to 2004.
