In a recent interview with Skratch ‘N SniffGrammy Award-nominated songwriter, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and producer Wolfgang Van Halen spoke about “The End”, the third album from his MAMMOTH project (formerly MAMMOTH WVH),which arrived last October via BMG. The 10-track effort was recorded at the legendary 5150 studio with Wolfgang‘s producer friend and collaborator Michael “Elvis” Baskette. Regarding his songwriting process, Wolfgang said: “I feel like when you’re working on a song, it’s not so much you’re working on it as it is showing itself to you. ‘Cause I think that sometimes your favorite idea can end up being your least favorite song on the record because it just happens that way. I think it’s just like a piece of marble and you’re chipping away at it rather than building something. The idea shows itself to you through the process rather than you creating it. At least that’s what it feels like, even though that might be a little poetically up my ass in a way of saying that.”

After the interviewer noted that some of the musical ideas that were conceived during the songwriting process for “The End” but never fully realized may end up on the next MAMMOTH album “or two records from now”, Wolfgang concurred. “Well, yeah,” he said. “And I think the thing that’s always really good is that every time we (Van HalenBaskette, engineer Jef Moll and assistant engineer Josh Saldate) get together, we end up writing 10 more songs for the record. But about every record, there’s about two to five ideas that kind of fall off the wayside because we just didn’t have enough time. The ideas were great, but we they never showed themselves in time, I guess. And that happens every record. So at this point we have this mini vault of ideas that are inspiring but not finished. And so eventually you might hear it again and hear it in a different light and it’s, like, ‘Oh, that’s what it’s missing,’ and then you put it together and it ends up on a record. So I think right now if I didn’t come up with any new ideas, we’d have enough for a fourth record, but by the time I know we get to that recording time, be it in two years or whenever we do, I’ll have written 10 to 15 more ideas. So you’re kind of always on this creative overflow, which is a nice thing to have, where you can just have enough ideas where you can throw something at the wall and see if it sticks.”

Asked if he is the type of person who works best under a deadline where he has to cap it at a certain point or he will just continue writing, Wolfgang said: “It’s tough. I think having Elvis there is really that… He’s shockingly good at writing out the schedule. At the top of our three months we have working for the record, he’ll have a daily schedule of everything we’ll do. And we’re almost following exactly or beating it to a certain extent. So we’re able to, like, ‘Ah, we only have these few days left. We should probably take this song and shelve it for later.’ And he’s really good at planning. So, if he wasn’t there, I’d probably get in my head and lose track. But when you’re with a label, you have to make sure you have a record by the time you’re done recording.”

Wolfgang continued: “I remember we were in the studio at, like, three in the morning before everybody had to go home the next day. And that was the solo for ‘Better Off’ on (‘The End’) record. We hadn’t had it yet, and I didn’t know what to do, I just couldn’t think of anything. So we were just sitting in the studio for, like, an hour and a half at three in the morning and just throwing stuff at the wall and it finally hit. So, yeah, it was down to the wire with certain songs, but it’s just funny how that happens. It’s just like any sort of creative effort, I guess.”

In an interview with the Thinking About Guitar podcast of last November, Wolfgang Van Halen, who replaced Michael Anthony in VAN HALEN, once again confirmed that his father, legendary VAN HALEN guitarist Eddie Van Halen, had contemplated a “kitchen-sink” VAN HALEN tour that would have included Anthony, as well as vocal turns from both Sammy Hagar and David Lee Roth. There was even talk about bringing back Gary Cherone, who sang with the band on one poorly received album, 1998’s “Van Halen III”. Asked why the tour ultimately didn’t happen, Wolfgang, who fronts his own band called MAMMOTH, said: “It was dad’s health. But that had been always our idea. Dad and I came up with that idea, the kitchen sink tour, when we were in the hospital in 2019. And it just always was working under the assumption that things would get better, and it didn’t. So that’s why.”

Asked what the chances are of him one day making an album with Sammy and MichaelWolfgang responded: “Never. It’s not in the cards for me. MAMMOTH is very much where I’m happy. I have nothing but appreciation for VAN HALEN and its history. But when it comes to MAMMOTH, that’s all I wanna do.”

In early 2019, a rumor surfaced that the classic VAN HALEN lineup would reunite that summer for a run of stadium shows. This would have been the first time that MichaelEddieDavid and Alex Van Halen performed together since 1984.

The rumors originally started with Roth, who hinted to Vulture that VAN HALEN would be playing stadiums with Anthony back in the lineup.

VAN HALEN and Anthony had not been on good terms for more than a decade, with Anthony not invited to join the reunion with Roth that began in 2007. The subsequent two tours and studio album, “A Different Kind Of Truth”, featured Wolfgang on bass.

Anthony took a pay cut and signed away all of his rights to the band name and logo in order to participate in VAN HALEN‘s 2004 tour, which featured Hagar.

Eddie died in October 2020 at St. John’s Hospital in Santa Monica, California. The iconic VAN HALEN axeman died from complications due to cancer, his son confirmed.

In January 2024, Wolfgang spoke to Loudwire about what it was like to reconnect with Michael at MAMMOTH‘s December 8, 2023 concert in Las Vegas, Nevada. The MAMMOTH leader said: “He’s family. It was long overdue. I think we had planned that at least since I’ve been touring and it just worked out and it was very wonderful to see him. [I] love that my mom [Valerie Bertinelli] was there [and] my uncle Patrick who is also part of the MAMMOTH team; he goes way back with them. It’s really nice to have that little reunion.”

A few hours after MAMMOTH‘s concert in Las Vegas, Wolfgang took to his social media to share a couple of backstage photos of him with Michael at the House Of Blues, and he included the following message: “Ran into an old friend at the @mammothwvh show in Vegas tonight. (Love ya, Mikey)”

Michael shared a video of the MAMMOTH concert and a backstage photo of him and Wolfgang, and he wrote: “Went to see MAMMOTH last night here in Vegas, and they threw it down! Love ya Wolf, so great to see ya! (Proud of you brother!!)” Asked by a fan how long it had been since he and Wolfgang last met, Michael replied: “First time in 20 years.”

MAMMOTH  has released its third album, “The End”, on October 24 via BMG. Recorded at the legendary 5150 studio, the album was produced by friend and collaborator Michael “Elvis” Baskette. The official music video for the fourth single from “The End”, a track called “Same Old Song”, is nw released.
