DAVID ELLEFSON rips DAVE MUSTAINE over "past behavior" comments: “You know what? Fuck off. Just fuck off”.
11-03-2026
During a new appearance on “Quemar Un Patrullero”, the podcast hosted by Gustavo Olmedo, a prominent Argentine journalist, radio host, and author specializing in rock and heavy metal music, former MEGADETH bassist David Ellefson discussed his relationship with the band’s leader Dave Mustaine. He said: ”When I went back to MEGADETH in 2010, Dave and I were close — we were really close. I was helping him with some personal things. He became a good friend to me during that time. So there were periods of closeness as men, as brothers. And I found those opportunities were always the best when it was just me and Dave, when there wasn’t another person in the room. We didn’t have to sort of be on stage performing for anyone. It was just me and him being brothers, at Starbucks drinking coffee, whatever. And those moments were genuine, they were sincere, they were heartfelt.”
Referencing MEGADETH‘s 2022 album “The Sick, The Dying… And The Dead!”, the original version of which featured his bass tracks on it before he was kicked out of the band and his tracks were replaced by those of Steve DiGiorgio, Ellefson said: “Dave didn’t wanna use any of my music. I could tell he resented me. He didn’t want me to be on that album. And I finally wrote a song that was originally going to be included on it. It was a ballad that I’ve kept, ’cause I had Kiko (Loureiro, then-MEGADETH guitarist) play the guitar on it. And it was a very good song — I think an extremely good song that has a place somewhere. But it didn’t make the record.”
Elaborating on his working relationship with Mustaine during the making of what became “The Sick, The Dying… And The Dead!”, Ellefson added: “Dave and I even had a really close moment. We were writing the lyrics for the song that became ‘Soldier On!’ He eventually took my lyrics off of it and then used the song without my lyrical contributions… He wrote the music — it was his song — but I was invited to write the lyrics for it, which I did. And he decided to call it ‘Soldier On!’ We collaborated from there, which I say, well, look, when Dave got fired from METALLICA, at least they kept his words and his music and they paid him and gave him credit. Dave wasn’t so kind to me. He kicked me out, took my performances off the record, and took my lyrics and everything off the record. So I think I have a horse in that race when I speak about how properly METALLICA handled things and how I think improperly things were handled on my behalf. ‘Cause I saw it; I lived it.”
Ellefson went on to say that his “farewell with MEGADETH was really in 2018. That was my farewell. That was my farewell tour,” he explained. “I feel like I played on the last great MEGADETH record, which was (2016’s) ‘Dystopia’. Dave announced from the stage in Buenos Aires in November 2017, he said, ‘We’re gonna go home and start working on a new album.’ So I feel like that was kind of a good closure for me with MEGADETH, which is why I’ve moved on and done so much other stuff. I don’t have bitterness in my heart. I almost feel like I was set free to not have to deal with that anymore. Whereas Dave had bitterness toward METALLICA, I don’t have bitterness toward DaveorMEGADETH. I really don’t.”
Ellefson also once again opened up about his dismissal from MEGADETH nearly five years ago, just days after sexually tinged messages and explicit video footage involving the bassist were posted on Twitter. At the time, Ellefson released a statement on Instagram denying all social media chatter that he “groomed” an underage fan. He also filed a report with the police department in Scottsdale, Arizona alleging unlawful distribution of sexually explicit images of him by unknown offenders. In the report, Ellefson admitted that he had been exchanging sexual text messages with a Dutch teenager, who captured a video of several of their virtual “masturbating encounters” without his consent and shared them with friends. (According to Ellefson, the woman was 19 at the time of their first virtual sexual encounter.) Ellefson, who lives in Scottsdale, first became aware of the video on May 9, 2021, when the claim “David Ellefson of MEGADETH is a pedophile” appeared on Instagram. Ellefson told police he was notified on May 14 by MEGADETH that the band would be parting ways with him. Three days later, he was fired.
David told Olmedo: “(The MEGADETH camp) called me to fire me. And I told ’em, ‘Guys, there’s nothing here. There’s no reason to let me go. This is all just nonsense on the Internet. It’s all it is. It’s nothing at all. And I will maintain that position all along,’ and I have.
“At some point you could just stay going after people on the Internet and trolls and all this kind of shit. It’s endless,” David continued. “There is no Internet police, there’s no Internet human resources, where you can go and say, ‘Hey, this guy said this’ and ‘this person said this’, and da, da, da, because you should, because it’s highly defamatory. And defamation is when something harms your reputation, maybe even prevents you from getting more work. Those are real things. And the fact that it can happen on the Internet, which is kind of a fake place. It’s not even real. It’s kind of a fake place, yet that that could somehow come over to your reality. I’m fortunate that the fanbase stood by me. They said, ‘Dude, that is bullshit. How dare you do that to Ellefson?'”
Addressing the fact that Mustaine seemingly gave the story “legs” in the media by releasing a statement at the time in which he said “there are clearly aspects of David‘s private life that he has kept to himself,” Ellefson said: “The statement that was put out, what Dave personally signed, was deflectionary, to kind of keep it away from him. And I said, ‘There’s nothing to keep away. There’s nothing here.’ I mean, my own legal team even said, ‘Hey, if you wanna open up on the Internet and blast that guy, you have our blessing’. And this is a top-level law firm in Phoenix, and they said, ‘We have never seen something so unconscionable’ as a legal word, meaning unconscious — not thinking, with no, basically, human heart. ‘You have our blessing.’
“There’s a Bible scripture. It says, ‘Resist the devil and he will flee from you.’ And that’s where I went with it. I said, ‘I could tangle with this guy again, and I could fight with this guy like I did with the lawsuit,’ which I had every right to do of what happened then,” Ellefson continued, referencing the $18.5-million lawsuit he filed against Mustaine in 2004, alleging the frontman shortchanged him on profits and backed out of a deal to turn Megadeth Inc. over to him when the band broke up in 2002. (The lawsuit was eventually dismissed and Ellefson rejoined MEGADETH in 2010.) “And Dave did not win the lawsuit,” Ellefson clarified. “We settled out of court. That was another one. It was just another opportunity to try to kick me. And it’s, like, no, we settled out of court. And I ended up in a far better position than had I not done that, so I’m glad I went through that process, as horrible as it was.”
Ellefson also touched upon an interview Mustaine gave to SiriusXM‘s “Trunk Nation With Eddie Trunk” last December in which the MEGADETH leader shot down the possibility of his band playing the final show of its farewell tour with a lineup that could include all surviving former members of the group, with Mustaine explaining, “I can’t really do that, because of the behavior of one of the bandmembers in the past.” Ellefson said: “To have it end where it did, and then (for Mustaine) even recently to say, ‘Oh, because of what one person did, I can’t bring anyone back.’ You know what? Fuck off. Just fuck off. Who is that one person? It wasn’t me, ’cause I didn’t do anything that would prevent me from coming back at all. At all. And so this sort of deflectionary thing, to sort of get on some moral high ground, it’s, like, gimme a break. Really? And look, I had rock stars much bigger than Dave coming to my side and coming to my aid, standing by me, saying, ‘Man, just let me know if you need anything at all. That’s really fucked up.’ It’s fucked up about how I was handled being discarded. People saying, ‘I’m really disappointed that they chose business over brotherhood,’ ’cause at the end of the day, the brotherhood will always last beyond the business of owning a rock band — especially something we started and built together.”
Ellefson added: “So, with that said, at one level, again, I could call a lawyer, I could go back into defamation lawsuits, and I have every right to — trust me. But at the same time, there’s two ways to win in tug of war. I either pull you over the line or I just drop the rope and let you fall on your ass. (Laughs) And that’s what I’ve chosen to do — drop the rope. Drop the rock.”
According to Billboard, MEGADETH has secured its first-ever first No. 1 album in the U.S. with the band’s final self-titled effort.
“Megadeth” debuted at the top of the chart after earning 73,000 equivalent album units in the United States in the week ending January 29, according to Luminate. The bulk of that sum was driven by pure album sales (purchases of physical and digital copies of the album), totaling 69,000.
The follow-up to “The Sick, The Dying… And The Dead!”, “Megadeth” was released via MEGADETH leader Dave Mustaine‘s Tradecraft imprint on Frontiers Label Group‘s new BLKIIBLK label.
MEGADETH also claims the top spot in Australia (highest previous position No. 2) and Austria (highest previous position No. 8). Other top five spots include No. 2 in Finland (and No. 1 physical), Sweden (plus No. 1 physical; highest previous position No. 9), and Belgium (highest previous position: No. 6); No. 3 in both the U.K. and Germany (highest previous position No. 6); No. 4 in the Netherlands (highest previous position No. 7); and No. 5 in both Italy (highest previous position No. 15) and New Zealand (highest chart position ever). Debuts in additional territories are still being compiled at press time.
Mustaine says: “After 40 years of delivering MEGADETH music, playing shows around the world, I have nothing but gratitude at this moment. Finding out that our last MEGADETH record is also our first No. 1 only further validates my will to go out on top.
“Thank you to my family, Teemu Mäntysaari, James LoMenzo, Dirk Verbueren and Chris Rakestraw, all our fans for making this possible. Without you MEGADETH would not be as successful as we are. I’d also like to thank the people behind the scenes, our management, Danny Nozell, Justis Mustaine, and Steve Ross at CTK, and our label BLKIIBLK/Tradecraft.
“This recording is a labour of love, and I hope you enjoy this as much as we do. See you on tour soon!”
Mäntysaari states: “Absolutely amazing news! Thank you and congrats to our entire extended MEGADETH family!”
LoMenzo says: “I want to sincerely thank all our friends and fans who grabbed a copy, we’re over the moon!”
Verbeuren adds: “It feels unbelievable to sit atop the charts with an album that’s uncompromisingly MEGADETH. Huge thanks to all of you who support us- you made this happen! See you on tour!”
MEGADETH‘s version of “Ride The Lightning”, the title track of METALLICA‘s 1984 album for which MEGADETH leader Dave Mustaine got a co-writing credit following his 1983 departure from the legendary heavy metal band, is now released. The song is released as a celebration of the album release of MEGADETH’s final and eponymous album, ‘Megadeth’, on January 23rd, 2026.

MEGADETH‘s version of “Ride The Lightning” appears on the band’s final album, simply titled “Megadeth”, which was released on Friday, January 23 via Mustaine‘s Tradecraft imprint in partnership with Frontiers Label Group‘s new BLKIIBLK label.
Mustaine co-wrote the song “Ride The Lightning” with METALLICA guitarist/vocalist James Hetfield, drummer Lars Ulrich and then-bassist Cliff Burton.
In a recent interview with Spain’s MariskalRockTV, Mustaine spoke about his decision to include his version of “Ride The Lightning” on “Megadeth”. Regarding why he chose to record “Ride The Lightning” at this point in his career, Dave said: ”Probably ’cause it was the most emblematic of my guitar influence. The spider chord — you know how I do the spider chord. And then there’s something called grunting, where I’ll hit the chord a half a step below the note I want to go to. I’ll fret it and I’ll slide into it… It’s way heavier. So, to me, I call that grunting. So spider chords and grunting are in ‘Ride The Lightning’.”
Mustaine continued: “Having written so much of the songs with (METALLICA) — people think I wrote a lot, but on that record (‘Ride The Lightning’), it was ‘The Call Of Ktulu’, which used to be called ‘When Hell Freezes Over’, and (the title track) ‘Ride The Lightning’. And the previous album (METALLICA‘s 1983 debut, ‘Kill ‘Em All’) had four songs on it (that I co-wrote).”
Asked if the guitar solo in MEGADETH‘s version of “Ride The Lightning” is “very close to the original song” because current METALLICA guitarist Kirk Hammett copied Mustaine‘s solo from Dave‘s original version of “Ride The Lightning” with METALLICA, or if Mustaine simply “wanted to respect” Hammett‘s work by reproducing Hammett‘s solo from the 1984 album, Dave said: “I think Kirk — if you listen to (METALLICA‘s 1982) ‘No Life ‘Til Leather’ demo and then you listen to the ‘Kill ‘Em All’ record, it’s pretty clear that that Kirk had some instruction (about how to approach the guitar leads on that album). Was it note for note? No. But it was pretty close. So, when the opportunity came to do ‘Ride The Lightning’ (with MEGADETH), I didn’t really feel like I knew the song very well anymore, and I don’t remember what I played on for that song, for ‘Ride The Lightning’. I had a hard time finding anything that I played on either. So we just figured, ‘Fuck it. (Current MEGADETH guitarist) Teemu (Mäntysaari) and I’ll split the solo up, and half of it’ll be for him and half of it’ll be for me,’ and it turned out so that (Teemu) did a little more than half.”
Last month, Mustaine told Guitar World magazine about his decision to include his version of “Ride The Lightning” on “Megadeth”: “The main reason I chose to do this was to close the circle and pay my respects to my partners. I thought this was a really great way to do that.
“Whenever we select any other band’s music to go on our albums, sometimes there’s a lot of thought behind it and sometimes there’s not. This was one of the ones that we thought long and hard about, because all I wanted to do was play the song I wrote with the guys in METALLICA,” Mustaine explained. “I wanted to pay my respects to James Hetfield, who I think is an amazing guitar player, and Lars Ulrich, who was an excellent songwriter. I remember when I was there and we were putting these songs together, Lars didn’t just sit there; he was very instrumental in making these songs.
“Of course, when we got into making demos of these songs, it was fun to do the recordings, but we were never really able to do a full-on produced version of ‘Ride The Lightning’ while I was in METALLICA, and I would have loved to have heard that.
“I gotta tell you — listening back to James‘s original vocal performance, it was really tremendous,” Dave added.
“Anyway, there’s no big strategy; I have respect for the guys, and I just wanted to show that. And it’s a hell of a song.”

“When MEGADETH started, we said we would be fast and furious…we said so on the flyers we handed out,” Dave says. “This song is fast and furious. Know it! It has a very hooky chorus that draws you in and you can’t help but play air guitar and headbang to this one.
“It’s the second video from the new record that we made with Keith [Leman], who also directed ‘I Don’t Care’. It was a blast to make and it’s a tribute to my first Sensei, Benny ‘The Jet’ Urquidez and my professor, Reggie Almieda. Everyone on the set was really stoked to see each of us do our stunts. In the end, we got the balance of shredding and ass kicking just right!”

Dave Mustaine has confirmed to Rolling Stone magazine that the final MEGADETH album, simply titled “Megadeth”, will include his version of “Ride The Lightning”, the title track of METALLICA‘s 1984 album for which he got a co-writing credit following his 1983 departure from the band.
“It wasn’t really that I wanted to do my version,” he told Rolling Stone. “I think that we all wanted it to turn out a certain way, and for me, this was about something so much more than how a song turns out. It was about respect.”
Speaking specifically about METALLICA singer-guitarist James Hetfield, Mustaine added: “No one ever talks to me about that. One day he’s a singer, the next day he’s this fucking powerhouse and I’ve always respected him as a guitar player. So I wanted to do something to close the circle on my career right now, since it started off with (Mustaine‘s band before METALLICA) PANIC and several of the songs that ended up in the METALLICA repertoire, I wanted to do something that I felt would be a good song.”
Elaborating on his reasons for recording “Ride The Lightning” for MEGADETH‘s final album, Mustaine said: “Our intentions were pure. I didn’t have any reason I was going to say, ‘Oh, hey man, this thing that we’ve had for 40 years where you guys will never tour with me, me doing the song is going to change things.’ That wasn’t it at all. It was more about: This is my life going forward. I want to do things that are respectable. And I think doing something where we can pay honor to the guy that … I mean, I hate to say this, because it’s just so fucking arrogant, but the guitar playing in METALLICA changed the world.”
In a separate video message (see below), Mustaine said: “So on the new album we recorded ‘Ride The Lightning’, and the reason we did that was, obviously, it’s a song that I had a lot to do with writing it. And James and I, when we were working on the song, it became clear to me, when James first started playing guitar, how good of a guitar player he was. And I thought it would be really cool to close the circle to show respect, to play the songs that I’ve written with METALLICA and to honor our friendship, even though it’s been strained and ruined from emotions over the years when we were not necessarily friendly. But one thing I’ve always had is I’ve always had a tremendous respect for James‘s guitar playing and (METALLICA drummer) Lars‘s (Ulrich) songwriting. So, it was cool to do this and add it to the record. We sped it up just a little teeny bit, and we kind of played around a little bit with the solo and Teemu (Mäntysaari, MEGADETH guitarist) and I both tossed it back and forth to each other. So, you might hear a little bit of some differences with the tempos and, of course, I sing different from James too. But once again, it was about completing the circle and just showing what James and I, as guitar players, did to change the world.”
